HbA1c, cholesterol and CRP: understanding the blood tests we offer

What these three tests measure, what they cannot tell you and how to prepare.

HbA1c: a longer view of blood sugar

HbA1c measures glucose attached to haemoglobin in red blood cells. It gives an indication of average blood sugar over roughly the previous three months. A finger-prick glucose reading, by comparison, measures the level at a particular moment.

HbA1c is used in diabetes care, but your own target and the meaning of a result depend on your circumstances. A healthcare professional should explain what it means for you and whether further assessment is needed. Do not change diabetes medicines yourself in response to a result.

Lipid profile: looking at blood fats

A lipid profile provides information about fats in your blood. Cholesterol results can include total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol. Ask which measurements are included in your report and what they mean.

High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. Its significance is considered alongside factors such as age, blood pressure and other health conditions. A number on its own does not describe your whole risk of heart or circulation problems.

CRP: a marker of inflammation

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker that can rise with infection or inflammation. It does not identify the cause or tell you which part of the body is affected.

CRP is not a general “all clear” health check and is not recommended as a routine screening test for inflammation in someone without a clinical reason for testing. The pharmacist can discuss whether it is appropriate for your concern. Symptoms may need medical assessment even if a test result seems reassuring.

What to ask before arranging a blood test

Tell us what you want to find out, any symptoms you have, your medicines and whether a GP or specialist has already requested tests. Bring previous results if you want to discuss a change over time.

  • Is this the right test for my question?
  • How is the sample collected, and do I need to prepare?
  • When and how will I receive the result?
  • Who will explain it and arrange any follow-up?

Most cholesterol tests do not require fasting, but some do. Follow the specific preparation instructions you receive; do not fast or stop medicines simply because you are having a blood test.

Tests available at Ise Pharmacy

Our private prices are HbA1c £59, lipid profile £69 and CRP £59. Visit our blood testing page or call the team to discuss suitability and availability.

Before agreeing to a test, ask what the price includes and what happens if the result needs GP review. If you are unwell or your symptoms are getting worse, seek medical advice rather than waiting for a routine private test.
